Chapter 69 — The Naming of Indrajit

Agastya went on. When the gods learned that Indra had been taken, Brahma came to Lanka. He did not ratify Ravana's claim to the three worlds. He praised Meghanada's force, asked that Indra be released, and said that the son who had defeated Indra would thereafter be known as Indrajit, conqueror of Indra.

Indrajit named his price. He asked for immortality, and Brahma refused him: no creature on earth held that. So he asked for a term instead. Before entering battle he would honor fire with offerings, and that observance would be his protection; only if he went out to fight before the rite was complete could he be destroyed. Brahma granted it. Indra was released and returned to the gods.

Indra's captivity was over, and Meghanada left the episode with the name Indrajit.
